EcoTech Marine VorTech MP40 Magnetically driven propeller circulation pump & wave maker.
Reef-keeping is an ever-evolving endeavor. There are many "tools of the trade" to consider. Here I would like to talk about water movement and wave making using the EcoTech Marine VorTech MP40 propeller pump & wave maker.
Before I put these on sale on our site, I had to set one up myself to test it.I must say that after many months of use & fiddling, I have nothing negative to say about the MP40. I find it to be a wonderful tool. An incredible workhorse of a Wave Maker, super easy to setup, incredibly easy to clean, and ridiculously efficient.
There are 7 main modes to select from; Constant Speed, Random Reef Creast, Lagoon, Tidal Swell, Nutrient Transport, Short Pulse & Long Pulse. Each of these modes can be customized using the wireless controller, which can talk to "slave" pumps wirelessy. The Eco-Smart and Short Pulse modes are the ones used to make various "Waves" in your tank. There is a small video link at the end of this Newsletter.
The pump is solid construction, high quality & built to last. I really like the fact that there is no heat transfer from the pump to the tank, with the motor being on the outside. Also no pesky & unsightly cords to get stressed from tugging & bending and such, hence no stray current in the tank. I used to have a SCWD(switching current wave-making device) under my rock-work. I really liked it, but found myself tugging at the cord once in a while to stop it from vibrating. This was inadvisable and I knew it, but found myself doing it anyway. I imagine I'm not alone in this? When I did remove the SCWD & all of my circulation power-heads, I noticed that the Mag-Drive powering the SCWD was about to fray where it went into the pump. That could have stung. That's what I meant by no stray current or electric cords to tug on. Little or no heat enters the tank, as energy is transferred almost magically from the outside motor to the magnetically coupled wet-side propeller puck.
The easy cleaning part; Turn off the pump and just grab the wet-side and take it out to clean up and put it back. The propeller puck magnetically jumps back into place against the motor on the outside of the tank. Now that's easy maintenance.
I must also mention their customer service; Some of the best customer service you'll come across in supporting their products.
